"Sheepstealing" is a rotten way to characterize what can be a healthy progression in a Christian life. Megachurches, for example, often reflect a superficially appealing but theologically shallow form of Christianity -- rocky soil for the Word has difficulty taking deep root in. I think that more traditional churches should make a priority of outreach to these megachurches, to catch people as they fall away from the razzle-dazzle of contemporary worship, offering a deeper understanding of Christianity and what it means to be a Christian.

It’s still useful for missionary work, with people who don’t understand Christianity being able to ease their way into it. That said, the way the NIV redefines biblical narratives to suit a progressive agenda makes me suggest that devout Christians use a different translation. This isn’t even about the gendered language: stuff like referring to Phoebe as a servant, assume vs have authority, implying authority can be rightfully bestowed on women, and so on. This is by definition heresy.

Hey brother, really enjoying some of your videos since a friend mentioned your channel. Interesting note: the 2nd London Baptist Confession was first printed in 1677, and was functioning as confessional standards among Particular Baptist churches for two decades before The Act of Toleration was passed in 1689. The newfound religious freedom enabled the General Assembly of Particular Baptist churches to officially subscribe to the confession in that year. My understanding is that using "1689" to refer to the 1677 confession is ahistorical, and the fact that people use that date to refer to the confession reveals a degree of ignorance and superficiality that modern subscribers have, who often aren't really familiar with the historical context and-unfortunately-even the content of the confession. As an aside: I left the non-denominational church that I had been going to for over a decade, and joined an OPC church for about two years. I clearly expressed my reservations regarding the parts of the confession that I wasn't in agreement with when joining membership, and I think I did a basically good job of maintaining a submissive attitude while I was there. On more than one occasion I even found myself trying to express the Paedobaptist position to visitors/new members who didn't seem to have a strong grasp of the robust arguments in favor of the doctrine! After a period of discourse with the pastor, when we were both satisfied that I had offered them a satisfactory opportunity to change my mind, my wife and I moved to another church with the OPC church's blessing. I think it is really, really important for laymen to learn to submit to church leadership, even if they aren't fully agreed with the doctrine-and for leadership to be patient with those who are not (yet) fully onboard with the doctrine (as long as they are not contentious); otherwise, I doubt we are living up to the kind of relationship that the Scriptures describe between (under)shepherds and sheep.

A couple of questions or thoughts I have. 1: in what context did Jesus speak of the glory or splendor of Solomon? Is it possible that he was merely speaking of his restoration? 2: can a hypocrite come to repentance? 3: is it possible that Nebuchadnezzar did repent in chapter 2 and when he was humbled as a beast of the field it was Gods discipline as in Hebrews 12? 4. I would contend that as Nebuchadnezzar speak of how God can and does humble the proud, it is through personal experience.

AND ON THEIR EYES IS A VEIL; GREAT IS THE CHASTISEMENT THEY INCUR." 3) John Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 21, section 5 - "SOME ARE PREORDAINED TO ETERNAL LIFE, OTHERS TO ETERNAL DAMNATION, and accordingly, as each has been created for one or other of those ends, we say that he has been predestined to life or death." 4) "That owing to one man all pass into condemnation who are born of Adam unless they are born again in Christ, even as He has appointed them to be regenerated, before they die in the body, whom He PREDESTINATED TO EVERLASTING LIFE, as the most merciful bestower of grace; while to those whom He HAS PREDESTINATED TO ETERNAL DEATH, He is also the most righteous awarder of punishment not only on account of the sins which they add in the indulgence of their own will, but also because of their original sin, even if, as in the case of infants, they add nothing thereto. Now this is my definite view on that question, so that the hidden things of God may keep their secret, without impairing my own faith." - Augustine, City of God, On the Soul and its Origin, Book 4, Chapter 16. 5) In Islam, in the 2nd stage of "Taqdeer" (fate), it states that "Allah made a divine decree after the creation of Adam. Allah took out all of the progeny of Adam (i.e. all of the humans from the beginning of time until the end of time), and asked them "Am I not your Lord?" and all of the humans responded "We testify that You are our Lord!" THEN ALLAH DECREED TO THEM WHO SHALL GO TO PARADISE AND WHO SHALL GO TO HELL." 6) In Islam, Allah is exalted and pleased as he sends people to hell: this is the fatalistic claim of Islam. Fatalism is a belief that events are fixed in advance for all time in such a manner that human beings are powerless to change them. In this case, Allah will send to heaven whomever he pleases, and send to hell whomever he pleases. ("Unveiling Islam: An Insider’s Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs" pages 31-32, by authors Ergun Mehmet Caner and Emir Fethi Caner Grand Rapids, MI: Kregel Publications, 2002.) Totally agree with NOT buying a book for your Bible study. Save your money, most of those books have false doctrine. The textbook to use for Bible study is The Bible. King James. Totally agree with worst question ever is what does it mean to you? The Holy Bible is not subjective.

Agree with 2ND Commandment is very clear- no images. Period. No pictures, paintings, icons at all. Pictures of Our Lord are idols also because it's man's imagination that made the picture. I take a mixed view of Revelation. Chapters 11-13, 20-22 fit the Idealist view, but I take the rest as partial-preterist.

Sounds great, but is it readable? I have a book on Puritan theology by Beeke, but it is so ‘technical’ that I gave up on it after 50 pages. If I’m going to spend $150+ for a set, it better be something I can understand. I know Pastor Matt speaks to this issue, but I’d like to hear from some other readers as well.

Lutheranism didn't stop with Luther. It's not all about one man, and Lutherans (including Luther) always fought against that designation. That was a label put on Lutherans by the Roman Catholic Church. Luther wanted the movement to be called "Evangelicalism," but the last hope of that happening (at least in English-speaking contexts) when somewhat moderate fundamentalist Protestants in the 20th century decided that they weren't really "fundamentalists" anymore, and so they made a big, loud push to take the name "Evangelical." However, no matter what you call Lutherans, they have always followed the teachings put forth yes, by Luther, but also Melanchthon, Bugenhagen, Agricola, Schwann, Calov, Chemnitz, and many, many others. I mean, Luther didn't even write the Augsburg Confession.

John 3:16 says: "Ουτως γαρ ηγαπησεν ο Θεος τον κοσμον", and not: "Ουτως γαρ ηγαπησεν ο Θεος τους εκλεκτους", or "Ουτως γαρ ηγαπησεν ο Θεος τους προωρισθεντας προ καταβολης του κοσμου εις σωτηριαν". The phrase "Ουτως γαρ ηγαπησεν ο Θεος τον κοσμον" tells us the motive or the intention behind God sending His Yios Monogenes into the world; namely, His love for the world.
